Square Sixteen

Color: Country Rose
Pattern: Simple Single Crochet
Mood: Grateful. So far this year I've been feeling really good and I'm grateful for that. Mostly today though, I'm grateful for my amazing mother who helped me crochet this communal square peoject. She crocheted about 2/3 of it-- I just got it started for her. It was a joint effort. I am blessed to have someone so special in my life who gave me all the tools I need to be a good person and live an amazing life. Thanks mommy!

Square Fifteen

Color:
Robin's Egg Blue
Pattern: Half double crochet with triple slip stitch border
Mood: Stressed. Bar prep class tonight covered everything we're going to need to know for the bar in order to pass. Determined to maintain my calm, positive year despite the uncertainty of not having a job and the massive bar exam looming in the future.

Square Fourteen

Color: Red
Pattern: Single Crochet
Mood: Cold. It's cold out! Also I wanted to make a note of the pictures in this blog. The squares curl up very easily on the edges and I haven't steamed them yet so  you'll notice in a lot of these photos that the squares look either lopsided or have wavy edges or generally look terrible. Trust me, I'm not that bad at crochet, it just really doesn't photograph well. In this one I've used hooks to weight it down because the photo just make it look like a sideways trapezoid. Anyway I figured those of you following might like an explanation.

Square Twelve

Pattern: Single, Half-Double and Double Crochet
Mood: Calm. Trying to stay calm as my first day of classes started! Last semester of law school!

Square Eleven

Color: Antique Pink
Pattern: Single and Double Crochet
Mood: Thoughtful. Evan and I just saw Selma and it was very moving. I was reminded of the sadness of recent SCOTUS decisions that have gutted the 1965 Voting Rights Act. I was fortunate to meet John Lewis a couple of times on the Hill and I imagine it must pain him to see the direction this country is headed in with reversal of voting rights.

Square Ten

Color: Country Rose
Pattern: Popcorn
Mood: Annoyed. I can't get most of my books for the first two classes, and the Patriots are losing. More than that however, I don't like how the square came out. I crocheted it way too tight and I made it too small and then I decided to slipstitch the edges so I have no idea how I will incorporate this one on down the line. Also none of the squares are remotely the same size.

The subtitle of today's post is an homage to my day of teaching Joanna how to crochet! In truth the fisherman's shells pattern was my second full project but it was my first big venture.

Square One

In a lot of ways, this year is like starting on square one for me. It's a new year with new challenges but I optimistically believe that the opportunities will far outweigh the challenges. As such, I've decided to try to create a crochet blanket out of 365 squares. One a day for every day this year. No particular pattern, no particular color, no plan-- just crochet.

Here I'll record the square of the day and the color and pattern I invented. If I can, I'll try to sum up the square in one descriptive word to match my feelings for that day. At the end of the year, I believe we'll see that the positive squares outweigh the negative, but either way, it'll be the year in squares. One day at a time, one square at a time.

Oswald is very interested in this project so he's decided to dive in head first as my yarn body guard... Or something.

Today is January 2nd but I made a square yesterday so I'll start with that one and today will have two posts.

January 1st, 2015

Color: Pastel Pink
Pattern: Row of double crochet, row of half double crochet, and row of double crochet. (There are a few single crochet rows in there too).
Mood: Optimistic
